drawings are important in conveying useful information to other engineers or machinists in a
standard acceptable manner to allow the readers of these drawings to visualize what the proposed
product would look like. More significantly, information such as the dimensions of the proposed
product, or what it would look like when viewed from the top or from the side or the front is
provided. The drawings will also specify what type of material is to be used to make this prod-
uct. In order to draw or read engineering drawings, you must first learn a set of standard rules
that are followed by all engineers, draftspersons, and machinists. In the next sections, we will
briefly discuss these rules.

16.2 Orthographic Views


Orthographic views(diagrams) show what an object’s projection looks like when seen from the
top, the front, or the side. To better understand what we mean by orthographic views, imag-
ine that you have placed the object shown in Figure 16.1 in the center of a glass box.
