Uefa is set to move the Champions
League final from St Petersburg after
Russia sent troops into east Ukraine.
The prospect of some fans being
unable to attend and the intense polit-
ical pressure around the staging of
Uefa’s showpiece event has led to inter-
nal talks on the final being moved. The
prime minister, Boris Johnson, has
added his voice to the clamour for Uefa
to find a new venue.

Deeney: Teach

black history

Matt Dickinson Senior Sports Writer

Eddie Jones has paved the way for
Manu Tuilagi to start his first Guinness
Six Nations match for two years,
against Wales on Saturday, by dropping
Joe Marchant.
The Harlequins back was left out of
England’s 25-man group for the match
at Twickenham, along with Joe
Launchbury. Courtney Lawes was
retained and could captain the side, as
he did in the autumn, despite having
missed the games with Scotland and
Italy because of concussion.
The absence of Marchant, 25, is
purely a selection decision and will
allow Tuilagi, 30, to come into the team
either in his familiar position of centre
or on the wing, where Jones used him
against Australia in November. In that
scenario, Elliot Daly may return to the

Troy Deeney has called for BAME
experiences to be made a mandatory
part of the school curriculum after
commissioning a YouGov survey of
1,000 teachers that was “damning” of
the education system.
The Birmingham City striker, a prom-
inent voice on race issues in football, said
he launched the campaign because he
believes that schooling is “failing child-
ren from ethnic minorities” and not do-
ing enough to tackle racism in society.
Deeney has written an open letter to
Nadhim Zahawi, the secretary of state
for education, including a demand for
mandatory teaching of “black, Asian
and minority ethnic histories and expe-
riences”. “Everything else is moving
forward in education,” Deeney said.
“Why is this such a difficult subject?”

Uefa to strip Russia of final

Martyn Ziegler Chief Sports Reporter Uefa, which counts both Ukraine and
Russia among its 55 member asso-
ciations, said in a statement that it is
“constantly and closely monitoring the
situation and any decision would be
made in due course if necessary”.
The search to find an alternative to St
Petersburg has begun, with Wembley
Stadium among several options under
consideration.
A decision on the venue for the final
may not be made until early that
month, as one idea being explored is to

wait until the semi-finals have been
played and then choose a venue that is
fair and convenient for both finalists.
Uefa’s experience during the
pandemic last year showed that it can
move its showpiece event at only a few
weeks’ notice. In that case it switched
the final from Istanbul to Porto because
of a high number of Covid cases in
Turkey.
Uefa’s leaders are to address the issue
in the coming days and have already
postponed a youth league match due to

be played in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital,
next week. No decision has been made
so far on the final but if fans cannot
travel, that is likely to be a tipping point.
This month Uefa announced that the
clubs who make it to the final of the
Champions League will each be able to
award 5,000 free tickets to their most
loyal fans. The final is due to be played
at the 68,000-seat Gazprom Arena on
May 28. Gazprom, the large Russian
energy corporation which is majority
