268 Neuroanatomy: Draw It to Know It
Know-It Points
Cerebral Hemisphere — Lateral Face
■ Th e area anterior to the central sulcus is the frontal
lobe.
■ Posterior to the lateral parietotemporal line lies the
occipital lobe.
■ Superior to the temporo-occipital line lies the
parietal lobe, and inferior to it lies the temporal lobe.
■ Th e limbic lobe is present only on the brain’s inferior
and medial surfaces.
■ Th e precentral g yrus lies in between the precentral
sulcus and the central sulcus; it is the primary motor
area.
■ Th e postcentral g yrus lies in between the postcentral
sulcus and the central sulcus; it is the primary
sensory area.
Cerebral Hemisphere — Medial Face
■ Th e cingulate sulcus and collateral sulcus delineate
the bulk of the limbic lobe.
■ Th e frontal lobe lies anterior to the central sulcus.
■ Th e parieto-occipital sulcus separates the parietal
lobe, anteriorly, from the occipital lobe, posteriorly.
■ Th e subparietal sulcus demarcates the boundary
between the parietal and limbic lobes.
■ Th e temporal lobe lies anterior to the basal
parietotemporal line.
■ Th e cuneus lies superior to the calcarine sulcus.
■ Th e parahippocampal g yrus lies superior to the
collateral sulcus.
■ Th e fusiform g yrus lies in between the collateral and
occipitotemporal sulci.
Cerebral Hemisphere — Inferior Face
■ Th e frontal pole lies at the anterior end of the
frontal lobe.
■ Th e temporal pole lies at the anterior end of the
temporal lobe.
■ Th e occipital pole lies at the posterior end of the
occipital lobe.
■ Th e Sylvian fi ssure runs in between the frontal and
temporal lobes and ascends much of the lateral aspect
of the brain.
The Insula ( Advanced )
■ Th e insula underlies the cerebral opercula.
■ Th e circular sulcus circumscribes the insula.
■ Th e central sulcus extends through the insula and
divides the insula into anterior and posterior lobules.
■ Th e orbital operculum lies inferior to the anterior
horizontal ramus of the Sylvian fi ssure.
■ Th e frontal operculum lies in between the anterior
horizontal and anterior ascending Sylvian fi ssure rami.
■ Th e parietal operculum lies in between the anterior
ascending and posterior Sylvian fi ssure rami.
■ Th e temporal operculum lies inferior to the posterior
ramus of the Sylvian fi s s u r e.
