S

moothies just seem to work well for people
who had weight loss surgery. They’re easy
to make, portable, and taste good. You don’t have
to remember to chew them, the varieties are
endless, and they can give you a good shot of
protein. What’s not to like?

Because all the smoothies in this chapter are made in the blender, they work
great for Stage 3, smooth foods, in your postoperative diet progression. If you
had AGB surgery, these recipes work perfectly when you get a fill, or adjust-
ment, and must follow the smooth food diet stage for a day or two.

If you’re still in the stages of the diet progression, take careful note of the
yield for each recipe, because it’s probably more than you can or should
eat. Either split it into two portions to share with someone else or halve the
recipe for yourself. If you’re months or years out from surgery, you know
your portion sizes have increased over time. You may want to double the
recipe if you use it for a meal; otherwise it can be a snack.

Note that sugar occurs naturally in milk, as lactose, and in fruit, as fructose.
These sugars do not cause dumping syndrome unless they’re concentrated,
like in fruit juice. We use sugar substitutes in our recipes, so the sugar content
is not from added sugars.
