Assignment

Capture fireworks successfully

Successfully capturing fireworks can take some practice, but the results are worth the effort as
you will see once you complete this assignment and share your favorite image on the website.

Living in San Diego has the advantage of year-round fireworks displays. For example, SeaWorld
has brief nightly shows all summer long and at many other times throughout the year. To cap-
ture this image, I checked the SeaWorld schedule and waited for a clear night; then, I went to an
area where I knew there would be an uninterrupted view of the fireworks.

By photographing from a bridge, I was able to capture the fireworks display and the reflection
of the fireworks in the bay. Once I found my location, carried up my gear, and set up my tripod,
I still had to wait for the fireworks to start before I could compose the image. I used a cable
release to time the explosions. This worked well as it allowed me to keep an eye on my sur-
roundings because I was on the side of the road. The shutter speed for this image was 6.6 sec-
onds with an aperture of f/16 and ISO 400.
