Regular bovine colostrum contains anti-
bodies against many human pathogens includ-
ing Candida albicans, Cryptsporium parvum,
Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli.J5, Klebsi-
ella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomo-
nas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium,
Serratia marcescens HY, Staphylococcus
aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Strepto-
coccus pyogenes, Streptoccus faecalis, and
Streptococcus viridians.
Colostrum is recognized for its immune
factors and growth factors. In the gastrointes-
tinal tract, bovine colostrum may have a role
in maintenance of integrity of mucosa, per-
meability, local immunity, systemic immu-
nity, and antigen handling. A commercial
colostrum powder containing 40% IgG and
other immunoglobulins is marketed as a food
supplement. The product is claimed to aid in
healthy nutrition and cell repair/regeneration.
The benefi cial attributes include anti -
infl ammatory effects. It is claimed to promote
enteric health, immune health, and cognitive
ability. Additional application of colostrums
is in sports nutrition and in skin care products
and cosmetics.
