John George Brown (American, 1831-1913)
Daisy
Inscribed and signed “Copyright/J.G. Brown
N.A.” l.l., titled and inscribed, possibly “J.G.
Brown N.A.,” on an unidentified partial label
affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 30 1/8 x 20 1/4 in. (76.5 x 51.5
cm), framed.
Condition: Minor retouch, fine craquelure.
N.B. The painting at hand is almost certainly
the work exhibited under this same title at the
Autumn Exhibition at the National Academy of
Design, New York, November 19–December
15, 1888 (cat. no. 362). The work is described
in a New York Times review of the exhibition,
“The Autumn Academy,” (Nov. 19, 1888, p. 4)
as a “smiling girl of ten with hard-painted face,
a bluish dress very nicely wrought, and bare
feet and hands skillfully painted. The sunny
background is nicely painted in.” Copyright
records of the Library of Congress for 1888
list a painting titled Daisy, measuring 30 x
20 inches, registered in December. In the
summer of 1888, Brown was working in the
Catskills, a likely locale for this subject.
