Food or “that which sustains,” is represented by the hieroglyph for bread which comes
from grain and ultimately plants½¼. Therefore, we are to understand that the main form of
food comes from plants although flesh foods, (Amait), from animals were re-
cognized. The ordinary Kemeticpopulace did consume some flesh foods, mostly poultry, 66
and some fish. However, flesh foods were shunned by the Ancient Egyptian doctors who
were also priests and priestesses and anyone coming to them for seeking health counseling
was counseled to enter into rigorous purifications (detoxifications) and to then adopt a prop-
er “living foods” (plants and fruits) diet in order to promote health. Notice that the symbol
“ha”,N, meaning “flesh” appears in the words , “Amm” and “Amait” (flesh food)
and also appears in the word , “Mtua” – poison. Thus it is notable that the detri-
mental effects of flesh meat are incorporated into the spelling of the word for poison. The
unmistakable and obvious implication is that while flesh is a possible item that can be inges-
ted, it is not life-promoting, and consequently not a desirable form of food.
