consciousness,andjustaswhenthewindblowsacrossalakeandcreatesripples,thereflectionofthe
skyisobstructed,sotootheripplescreatedinthelakeofconsciousnessbytensionladenthoughtsob-
structthereflectionoftheSelf(peaceandjoy).Whenthesethoughtsarequietedthroughtherelaxa-
tionormeditationprocess,thentheSelfreflectsinthelakeofconsciousness,providingonewitha
feelingofexpansion,asenseofpeace,blissandimmortality.Inthisstateofconsciousness,thereisa
freeflowofhealingLifeForceEnergythathealsandmaintainshealthofthebodyandmind.Thisis
whathappenswhenyouenterintodeepdreamlesssleepeverynight,however,becauseyourcon-
sciousnessiswithdrawnduringthisprocess,youonlyknowthatyoufeelrestedandrelaxedwhen
youwakeup.Thisiswhyyouaretoldtogetlotsofrestwhenyouareilloryoumayfeelthatyouare
becomingillandinstinctivelyknowthatifyoutogotobedearly,thechancesarethatyouwillnot
becomeill.Thehealingcomesfromembracingyourtruenatureandlettinggoofyourbodyidentific-
ationbyrelaxingthedesiresofthemindandtemporarilygivingupworldlyactivities.Sleepis
nature’swayofprovidingyouwiththisexperience,however,itisnottheonlywaytohavethisex-
perience. This is where the practice of mystical spirituality comes in.
Throughtheprocessanddisciplinesofmysticalspirituality,youareabletoachievethestatewhere
youcanhavethisexperienceatalltimes,thestateofenlightenment.Theformalpracticeofmedita-
tionprovidesyouwiththisexperienceinitially,however,whentheteachingsbecomeintegratedinto
yourconsciousness,yourwisdomandintuitionalrealizationoftheteachingswillallowyoutomain-
tainthisexperience,evenamidstthemostchaoticcircumstances.So,integralandforemosttothepro-
cessofmaintainingorregainingoptimalphysicalormentalhealthisthepracticeofmeditationand
theotherdisciplinesofmysticalspirituality,becausetheultimatestateoftotalhealthisinthestateof
enlightenment.InIndianYogaphilosophy,“truehealth”istermed“Swastat”orbeingestablishedin
theSelf(thestateofEnlightenment).Althoughyouneedtohaveahealthydiet,properexerciseand
resttomaintainhealth,thesefactorsalonecanneverconfertotalhealth.Youmustengageinspiritual
practicestodiscoveryourtruenaturetobetrulyhealthy.Theancientmedicaltraditionssuchasthe
AyurvedicsystemofIndiaandTheTherapeuticsystemofAncientEgyptrecognizedthisandthere-
fore,inadditiontorecommendingandprescribingvariousdietsandherbsforspecificillnesses,also
recommendedmantrasandhekaurepetition(spiritualchantandprayers)tocalmthemindaswellas
the practice of meditation to promote healing.
ThegoalofSmaiTawi(yoga)istopromoteintegrationofthemind-body-spiritcomplexinorderto
produceoptimalhealthofthehumanbeing.Thisisaccomplishedthroughmentalandphysicalexer-
cises,whichpromotethefreeflowofspiritualenergybyreducingmentalcomplexescausedbyignor-
ance.Therearetworoadswhichhumanbeingscanfollow,oneofwisdomandtheotherofignorance.
Thepathofthemassesisgenerallythepathofignorance,whichleadsthemtonegativesituations,
thoughtsanddeeds.Theseinturnleadtoillhealthandsorrowinlife.Theotherroadisbasedonwis-
dom and it leads to health, true happiness and enlightenment.
