Thephysicalbodyiscomposedoftheelementsofcreation(earth,water,air,andfire)andthefour
qualitiesofmatter(hot,cold,wet,anddry).Ifthesefactorsaremaintainedinproperbalance,the
physicalbodywillbeafitconduittooperateinthephysicalrealmandallowthemindtoperceivethe
subtlevibrationsofthespiritualrealmaswell.Themindiscomposedofsubtlerelementswhich,
whenpurgedofegoisticthoughts,isabletoreflectthespiritualreality.Otherwise,theassociation
withthegrosserelementsofthebodyrendersitgross.Ifthesefactorsareoutofbalance,themind
willbedistractedwiththeconcernsofthebody(pain,illness,desireforfood,etc.)andwillnotbe
abletoexertself-efforttowardspiritualpracticeinordertodevelopsubtletyofintellect.Theintellect
will remain dull with the gross concerns of the physical world.
Modernphysicshasproventhatmatterisnotsolidbutthatitisinrealityenergyindifferentformsof
vibration,andevenenergyhasasubtlerbasisinthespiritualSelf.Fromtheperspectiveofmystical
spirituality,whatisconsideredtobe“solid”matter(theelements)isinrealitycondensedsubtlemat-
ter.Whatmakesitappearsolidisthelevelofignoranceoftheseerandtheintensificationofthebe-
liefinitasbeing“real.”Yourbodyappearstobesolidbutinrealityitisassolidasabodyyoumight
experienceinadream.Duetothesoul’sinvolvementintimeandspaceandhavingbeentaughttobe-
lieveintheworldoftimeandspaceasasolidreality,ordinarypeoplereinforcetheseideasthrough
indulgenceinemotions,feelingsandpleasuresofthesenses.Oneofthemostpowerfulareasofindul-
genceisintheconsumptionoffoods,whichgroundsandcondensesspiritualenergyinsteadofallow-
ingittoflowfreely.Fromaspiritualpointofview,thevibratoryenergyinmeatisverygroundingto
thesoul.Thismeansthattheelementswhichcomposethehumanbodyarerendered“heavier,”there-
foreblockingperceptionofthesubtlespiritualrealityandreinforcingthegrossrealityasbeingthe
only reality.
Foodisoftenusedasasourceofpleasureratherthannecessity.Modernsocietyadvocatesthecon-
sumptionofgoodtasting,processedfoodseventhoughtheymaycontainchemicalsorexcessive
quantitiesofothersubstancessuchasprocessedsugarsandsaltswhichthebodydoesnotneedatall
orinabundance.Inadditiontounsanitaryandinhumanelivingconditionsinwhichtheanimalsare
housedandslaughtered,thechemicalsandprocessingtechniqueswhichareusedbythemeatindustry
toraiseanimalsforfoodrendersthemeatverytoxictothehumanbody.Overaperiodoftimethese
