NITRO DERIVATIVES OF HALOGENOBENZENES 463

(D 1 )

(D 2 ) Action of CH 3 O- at very low concentration on residual picryl chloride.

With ammonia or amines picryl chloride yields picramide or its derivatives:

(10)

The reaction of picryl chloride with hydroxylamine hydrochloride is worth

mentioning. As Borsche [24] observed, instead of the expected phenylhydroxylamine

derivative, picramide was formed :

(11)

When reacted with hydroxylamine in the presence of sodium acetate, picryl
chloride was found to form dinitrodinitrosobenzene (Nietzki and Dietschy [30])
(p. 258).
Picryl chloride may be used as the starting material for the preparation of trinitro-
benzene (p. 255). With strong reducing agents, picryl chloride yields triamino-
benzene (Fleisch [31]) :

(12)

Picryl chloride is toxic. It acts in much the same way as chlorodinitrobenzene,
but is slightly less poisonous.
With aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene, anthracene, acenaphthene,
fluorene, phenanthrene, retene, picryl chloride forms addition compounds with
the mol. ratio 1:1.
