Anticipation of the Night – Stan Brakhage

Kyle Cooper was not the fi rst to explore the technique

of drawing directly on to fi lm before processing it. Stan

Brakhage exploited this technique for the title of his

experimental fi lm Anticipation of the Night (1962). The

avant-garde fi lmmaker introduced many inspiring ways

of manipulating fi lm material. By working directly on

fi lmstrips, sometimes without even using any camera

equipment whatsoever, Brakhage produced results that

raised questions about the very nature of fi lm. Even though

the latest software technology allows simulation of some

of those fi lm manipulation techniques, the digitisation of

fi lm editing appears to have weakened our awareness for

the true potential of conventional media technologies. The

solarisation fi lter, offered as part of the drop-down menu of

our software applications, for example, hardly refl ects the

way the intermediate exposure of fi lm materials in the dark

room modifi es the end result of photographic processing.
