Scratched Out – Pierre di Sciullo
Pierre di Sciullo, a French designer, created this font in 1988
following an investigation into legibility. Each letter is angrily
disfi gured in order to motivate readers to decipher the text
that is written. Di Sciullo fi rst used the font in 1991 to express
a controversial comment on the fi rst Gulf War. The letters
were meant to rebel against the message they conveyed.
The text was meant to ‘refuse itself’. The type appears to
hide behind a pattern.
