Streams of Consciousness – David Small and Tom White
This computational exercise uses moving text elements
to simulate the fl ow of water. A manual user interface allows
users to stop the fl ow of words, to push or pull individual
words and to change the words altogether. The title of
this work hints at the dilemma surrounding multimedia
typography. The computational arguments focus on
technological production and conscious communication.
The unconscious or preconscious perception of information
remains neglected. In order to understand the aesthetics
of virtual typography, we need to examine the way in which
information is expected to evolve from ambiguity into
meaning over time.
