Cardiovascular Fitness Procedures Manual

(coco) #1
If the SP gives a response of ‘No’ to all the above questions, these questions will not be

flagged for review by the Physician in the MEC.

In addition, SPs who are greater than 12 weeks pregnant will be excluded. A urine test for

pregnancy will be completed and a self-report of pregnancy status will be obtained. If these conditions are

confirmed in the Household Questionnaire, the SP is excluded from the CV component before they enter

the mobile examination center (MEC). The system will record the component status as ‘Not Done’ with

the comment ‘safety exclusion.’ The SP will not need to go to the CV room in the MEC to have this

exclusion recorded.

3.1.3 Medications

SPs are excluded from the CV Fitness component if they are taking medications that may

indicate the SP is being treated for a medical condition that would be a contraindication to performing a

treadmill test in the NHANES setting. In addition, SPs are also excluded if a medication they are taking

may affect the validity of the test results (i.e. beta blockers). Exclusionary medications include anti

arrhythmics, nitrates, beta-blockers, cardiac glycosides, ophthalmic beta-blockers, and

antihypertensive/betablocker/diuretic combinations. See Appendix C for a detailed list of exclusion

medications with class codes. This list is updated every 3 months if necessary to include recently released

medications.

Information on medications is collected in the Household Interview and displayed in the

Physician’s Exam application on the CV Review for Exclusion Medication screen. (See Exhibit 3-1.) If

an SP reported taking a medication that is on the exclusionary medication list, the system will flag the SP

for exclusion to CV Fitness. In addition, any reported prescription medications will flag that SP for

review by the MEC physician.

At the beginning of each session, the MEC physician will review the Exclusion Medication

screen and will confirm flagged exclusions by checking the reported medications with the current list of

exclusion medications. The physician will also check all reported prescription medications to confirm that

no exclusion medications were reported that did not flag an exclusion. If an exclusion medication is

confirmed the ‘Exclude from CV’ box will be checked. The system will block the SP from CV Fitness

and set the Component status for CV Fitness to ‘Not Done’ with the comment ‘safety exclusion.’
