Research associate at the Environmental Studies Program at
Oberlin College, USA and at the Crisis States Research Centre of the
Development Studies Institute (DESTIN) of the London School of
Economics, and at the Benfield Hazard Research Centre, University
College in London. Vice-chair of the Earthquakes and Megacities Ini-
tiative, vice-chair of the International Geographical Union’s Com-
mission on Hazards and Risks, and a research coordinator for the
United Nations University’s project on urban disasters. He is also an
advisor to the emergency-response program of the American Friends
Service Committee.
