THE EXILEvisiting Paris to deal with the publication of his books, and the
demonstration on the 16th decided him to leave immediately, so
that he would be able to answer his critics in a less disturbed
environment. On the morning o f the 17th September he departed
and, with a rather unimaginative disregard for their mental tran
quillity, left Euphrasie and his children at Ixelles.
