Olympus shooters can now expand
their photographic horizons with a new
M.Zuiko Digital 2x Teleconverter MC-20.
This piece of kit doubles the focal length
of a lens while keeping the whole package
nicely compact — a handy addition to the
bag of any photographer looking to get up
close with wild subjects that spook easily.
This year, medium-format camera
manufacturer Hasselblad celebrates the
50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 astronauts
using one of its cameras to document
humankind’s first visit to the lunar surface.
It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship
that has seen the Swedish company’s
cameras tested and used by NASA in the
decades of space training and exploration
that have followed.
Photographers looking to get more out
of their lighting have a powerful new
product available in the Profoto B10 Plus
flash head.
Doubling the power of its B10 little
brother, the B10 Plus delivers 500W —
10 times the light of a Speedlight — in a
small, lightweight package.
It looks to be a great product for location
shooters wanting a versatile lighting
solution that won’t break their back.
Photographers with a personal
project in need of funding
have until 10 August to submit
a proposal to Canon for a
chance to score $15K through
the company’s Pro Grants
programme. Last year’s
recipient was photographer
Michelle Hyslop, who was
awarded the grant for her
brilliant Kauri Dieback
project, featured in the last
issue of D-Photo.
Schools, non-profits, and
community groups also have
a chance to pick up funding
with Canon through the
Oceania Grants programme,
with three grants of $4K’
worth of gear and $1K in
cash awarded to projects
addressing social and
environmental issues in the
community.
See canon.co.nz for details.
The Auckland Festival of Photography this year presented
the Alex Mao Photography Award for emerging
photographers under 25 to Auckland secondary-school
student Amie Kaufman.
Amie won the $1200 cash prize with a nicely composed
image, titled Trying to Grow Up, taken in her family’s
Glen Eden back yard.
Alex Mao was a member of the New Zealand
Chinese Photography Association, and the prize was
established posthumously by his family to encourage
young photographers.
