redundancy and natural wastage. By October 1991, it was forced to
abandon its cherished ‘no layoffs’ policy for the first time in its history, as
downsizing became the order of the day. Digital’s employee retention ini-
tiatives were abandoned.
The computer industry has since gone through a traumatic restructur-
ing, with the largest players being amongst the most badly hit. By April
1995, Digital had been forced to reduce its work force worldwide to 63 100
employees.
