53 SOFT TISSUE INJURIES OF THE

HAND IN ATHLETES

INTRODUCTION

  • Hand injuries in athletes are common injuries that
require a thorough knowledge of anatomy for accurate
examination, diagnosis, and treatment. Most soft
tissue injuries of the hand can be acutely treated by
closed means, but many require definitive care by an
orthopaedic or plastic hand surgeon. Missed or misdi-
agnosed injuries can result in permanent deformity
and loss of function. Radiographs are indicated in
nearly all cases to evaluate for fracture or the presence
of foreign bodies in cases of fingertip injuries, and to
evaluate for joint incongruity or avulsion fracture in
cases of joint or tendon injury.
