FOLLOW THE LEADER
Christians” who are content in passively maintaining the tradition
established by others. Rather than being bound by tradition, they are
bound by the Spirit and the Word! Biblical leaders precipitate positive, needed
change!
Principle:
“An accomplishing leader originates and innovates.
Th e ‘maintenance leader’ protects the status quo.”^16
(Fred Smith)
Leaders are most often the precipitators...motivators...and innovators of
society. They are willing and eager to try new ideas while others around
them are more comfortable with the status quo. All you have to do to
destroy a leader is to take away his ability to try new ideas! He believes
that God is always ready to “...do a new thing” (Isa. 43:19)...give “new
wine...” (Mtt. 9:17)...cause us to sing a “...new song” (Ps. 40:3), and
speak in “...new tongues” (Mk. 16:17)! Since God’s mercies are “...new
every morning” (Lam. 3:23), most leaders have a new idea every day – if
not every hour!
Christian leaders are first and foremost committed to “Biblical change,”
rather than to carnal, fleshly, or worldly change. They know that change
based upon the flesh will not last – while change based upon the Spirit
will be both temporally relevant and eternally significant. Leaders want to
be God’s catalysts to bring about positive Biblical change in the lives
of individuals, the church, and the society. Godly leadership is only
motivated in precipitating authentic spiritual change that is in step with
what God’s Spirit is doing in the world to exalt the Lord Jesus so that “...
in everything He might have the supremacy” (Col. 1:18).
Principle:
“Good leaders precipitate Christ-centered change that
has temporal relevance and eternal signifi cance.”
That kind of positive Christ-centered change does not take place through
some kind of impersonal “spontaneous precipitation” or a “random
alignment of lucky circumstances.” All benevolent change that takes place
