Management is ministry for helping people. It helps its employees to
make a contribution to something worthwhile.^58


  • Management is a set of processes that can keep a complicated system
    of people and technology running smoothly. The most important
    aspects of management include planning, budgeting, organizing,
    staffing, controlling, and problem-solving. Leadership is a set of
    processes that creates organizations in the first place, or adapts them
    to significantly changing circumstances. Leadership defines what the
    future should look like, aligns people with that vision, and inspires them
    to make it happen despite the obstacles...For every entrepreneur or
    business builder who is a leader, we need hundreds of
    managers to run their ever-growing enterprises...The job
    of management is to win in the short term while making sure you’re
    in an even stronger position to win in the future...Systematically
    targeting objectives and budgeting for them, creating plans to achieve
    those objectives, organizing for implementation and then controlling
    the process to keep it on track – this is the essence of management.^59

  • Management activity may be reduced to two basic categories: the
    management of things and ideas. These represent the irreducible
    minimums of management. Unfortunately, people often fall into
    the things category...The leader or manager interested in progress

    • or in an organization’s existence beyond the present – must make
      management of ideas his top priority. What an organization will
      be tomorrow depends on how well it manages peoples’ ideas today...
      The leader or manager is responsible for creating a positive work
      environment. People have unlimited potential to be creative and
      achieve greater levels of productivity.^60

  • ‘Accomplishing tasks through people’ is a different paradigm than
    ‘building people through the accomplishment of tasks.’ With one, you
    get things done. With the other, you get them done with far
    greater creativity, synergy, and effectiveness...and in the process, you
    build the capacity to do more in the future as well.^61
