Source Du Pactole
Emile Louis Picault (French 1833 -1915)
The muscular male figure of a forger, nude save a
lioncloth, holding up a pair of calipers in one hand
and an anvil in the other, seated on a rocky boulder,
looking down on the ground, with an overturned
urn of smelt spilling to ground, raised on a polygon
base, the base with the title in raised letters “La Source
Du Pactole,” the side of base inscribed “E. Picault/ Salon
Des Beaux Arts”, a circular foundry stamp “Reduction
Mecanique A Collas Brevete”.

Italian Marble Figural Group of Bacchus

and Ariana

The figures of Bacchus and Ariana, both wearing

wreaths of grape vines around their head, carved

walking arm and arm, both standing contraposto on

their right legs, on an integrated platform dais,

inscribed on the base “Bacchus and Ariana”.

American Art Nouveau Marble Plaque

of Walter Rothschild Green

Caroline Shawk Brooks (American,1840-1900)

The circular white marble plaque carved with the

nude bust of a young child splashing in the waves,

accompanied by a two vintage photos of the artist’s

work on display as well as a book on the artist.

Height 15 1/2 inches (39.3 cm); length 13 inches (33 cm)

This marble has descended in the family to the pres-

ent day owner. Although the subject of this marble

is Walter Rothschild Green, the artist’s son, this

sculpture is reminiscent of Classical period mytho-

logical marbles of Venus and water. As an early

American woman artist, Caroline Shawk Brooks was

an anomaly, a successful sculptor who obtained

many important commissions in her native Midwest.

She is perhaps best known as “The Butter Woman”

as she produced detailed molds in butter which

served as the model for marbles.

The classical nude female, her hair in a chignon, cast with her
arms spread out, her long legs in a contraposto stance, an
oval beaded dias on an integrated square plinth base, inscribed
“Dietzsch Sachsenhausen 1921, verdigris warm brown patina.
Height 16 3/4 inches (42.5 cm); length of arm span 14 inches
(35.5 cm)
