very high incidence of cleft lip and cleft palate. People in the villages shunned many
of these children because of their appearance. Some of these children were horribly
disfigured, but the surgery made them look very normal and was life changing for
them and their families. It was also life changing for us, the people doing the
operations. It was very humbling to see how little these people had and yet they were
happy, friendly, and so appreciative for any little thing we could do for them.
Sometimes the mothers and fathers would walk for days with their child when they
heard the American doctors were coming.
I cleared bringing Dana along on one of these trips, thinking that seeing how
fortunate he really was compared to millions of people in this world might change
him. Much to my surprise, however, Dana wanted no part of it and absolutely refused
to go. His sister, who was fifteen at the time, went on a short three-day trip with us
instead, and it had a huge influence on her. I really wish Dana had gone. It may have
been an experience that would have made a difference in the person he is today.
