cern for orthodoxy. This is shown by the fact that in 1848 he began to run

out of money, and published no more books. He now held back some of his

latest writings, since their attacks on establishment Christianity were jeopard-

izing his chances of getting a position as a theology professor, for which he

now was aiming. But he was already acquiring notoriety in his opposition and

did not get the chair. After six years of circumspect maneuvering, he launched

an all-out pamphlet attack on the Danish state church. Strains accumulated;
