rice, a lobster, pitchers and jugs
and bottles of wine, could be seen
far down the street. On the Sunday
following publication day,
Elizabeth Nicholas, the immensely
respected Sunday Times travel
writer, published a review of the
book. As I read it – I did not then
know Mrs Nicholas, although she
and I became friends later – I
found it hard to believe my eyes.
She really liked the book, and she
