ChristianCollege,and VanderbiltUniversity
whereshe studiedbiology.She met her hus-
band,MichaelGough,while in line to register
for abiochemistry classat BrownUniversity
whereshe earnedher MS in Biology.They
married in 1964.Theylivedin Houston,TX
and StonyBrook,NY beforesettlingin the
Washington,DCsuburbsinSilverSpringand
thenin Bethesda,MD wheretheyliveduntil
2020 whentheymovedtoMercyRidgeRetire-
mentCommunity,Timonium, MD.
Afterworkinginseveralbiologylaboratories,
sheearnedher teachingcertificationand
becameascienceresource teacherfor English
as SecondLanguagestudentsat an elementary
schoolinWashington,DCand laterin the
Arlington,VA schoolsystem,fromwhichshe
retiredto spend moretime withher children
and grandchildren.
Lee was an avid reader,excellentcook,and a
naturelover.She wasanatural, patientand
caringteacher,helpingher studentsand her
familybetterunderstandthe worldaround
them.She was activeinthe Bannockburn com-
munityin Bethesdawhereshe livedfor 40
years.
Leewasprecededindeathbyhersister,
JoanneSpencer;and her brother,Wendell
Hackler.Sheissurvivedbyherhusband;her

himselfto his lifelonghobbyof designing
andmakingthings.Hewas the impetus
makingthe restorationof the CherryHill
Farm and Barnin Falls Churchasuccess.His
restorationof acenturiesold farmhouseand
periodfarmimplementsas well as hosting
of schoolfield tripswerewidelyrecognized
by the communityand agenerationof school
children.His passionfor customwoodcraft
continuedduringhis timeat Shenandoah
ValleyWestminster-Canterburyretirement
communitywherehe becameafixtureat
the woodworkingshop.Georgewill always
be rememberedfor his willingnessto design,
make,and craft exquisiteobjects.George
madebenches,little freelendinglibraries,
customfurnitureand framesfor the chapel,
toys for great-grandchildren,and numerous
“George,can youmakeoneof these?”
projects.
Georgeis survivedby his wifeof 71 years,

Collegeand wasthe subjectof her own show
at the Jewish Community Center. She loved
animals,Outlander, and wasan avidtennis
playerand fan. Joanwill be greatlymissed
by her family,including her husbandGary;

son-in-law Eric;grandchildren Zach,Alex and
Taylor;and her sisterCynthia Gingold. No
