Brew (watercolor on paper, 27x36)
Creating an interesting
composition is foremost to
making a successful painting,
so I use photographs as
references. In fact, a third
of my process is devoted to
photographing the setup,
arranging, rearranging,
experimenting with different
lighting sources, and adding
and subtracting until I believe the
subject is worthy of being painted.

Foul Ball (watercolor on paper, 12x18)
My attention was drawn to the crowd
in the background of a Little League
game. I could almost feel the glaring,
late-day sun shining in the fans’ faces
and hear their quiet conversations.
I tried to minimize detail and focus on
simple patterns created by the
striking lights and darks.
