As a landscape painter, I find
many other uses for violet. I dab dark
violets into wooded shadows to create
depth; scumble light violets over dis-
tant green fields to create distance;
and pop a highlight of rich, light
violet on a shadowed mountain range
to create a spot of sunlight.
With so many shades of violets
available—and so many potential
uses—you shouldn’t shrink away from
incorporating it into your paintings. PJ
