Dramatic Sky
The key to a dramatic sky is simply allowing it to take center stage; all the remaining
parts of the landscape must be subordinate.
If a painting is to be about a cloud, let it be about a cloud. It’s as simple as that.
The shapes and movement in a dramatic sky often say more on their own than the
use of intense colors can. Decide what’s most important. Is it the colors in the sky
or the cloud formations? Then, emphasize whichever is most important to you. The
color shouldn’t have to compete with all the shapes.
Also, consider the “weights” of color areas; for example, a large amount of dark,
pressing on a thin area of bright, intense light, will be more dramatic than if the bal-
ance of dark and light areas are fairly equal.
