Perhaps what’s most impressive
about Maxion’s paintings is how
much expression he captures even
when we’re only seeing the figures
from behind or the side. Splash Happy
(at left) expresses the simple joy of
playing in the waves with friends,
Maxion says—a feeling that’s percep-
tible even when we don’t see the faces
of those in the water. “Posture and
gesture communicate as much about
a person’s emotions and relationships
as facial expression,” he says.
In All In (above), body language
reveals everything. “I initially was
caught by the excitement and energy
of the boys racing headlong into
the water,” Maxion says. “The girls
