Today, on the Putney Pier
side of the Thames, is the
stone that marks the place
where the university boat race
starts; it first began in 1829
from Henley, but there’s
nothing to commemorate any
of the swimming races held
here. While the Wandsworth
Heritage Service has archives
about local swimming baths
there is ‘very little if anything
about swimming in the
Thames,’ explains Heritage
