unusual swims from
Westminster as well. In
August 1878 a lieutenant in
the Hungarian army decided
to swim to Greenwich on a
horse named Sultan. He was
accompanied by a steamer
carrying representatives of
the Austrian, Spanish, Persian
and Chinese embassies.
However, the horse, perhaps
unsurprisingly, didn’t like the
cheering and after five miles
the swim was abandoned
