The quality of the water
itself, however, didn’t seem
to cause concern: ‘we today
are very conscious of the
health risks of swimming in
possibly polluted water,’
writes Rose. ‘Strangely
enough, I have yet to find any
indication that this was a
concern for those involved
with the Beach in the 1930s.’
Instead, within a few years it
was increasingly being used
by hospital convalescents.
