and ‘uncommonly situated,
its very presence demands
explanation’. Erected in 1836
(although some reports say
1837), it joined a much
earlier stone of 1755 (which
itself replaced an earlier limit
mark). Both stones stood
together until 1950 when the
PLA presented the older one
to Southend Corporation for
