The Philolutic Society’s
accounts book from 1829 to
1833 includes weekly fines
for ‘non-bathing’ at a cost of
two shillings and sixpence.

the former barrister and MP
had been educated at Eton. In
1827 he’d become the last
Vice-Chancellor of England
and was knighted soon after.
