The various tests, which
became known as ‘passing’,
or ‘the Eton pass’, included ‘a
header’ (dive) from two or
three feet above water, and a
100 yards swim, fifty with
and fifty against a slow
stream. Each boy also had to
tread water and ‘while doing
so, to keep his hands up to the
level of his head or higher’,
and to swim on his back.

allowed, for the swimmer
