Main Themes from Participants’ Responses:
Inadequate training of health care providers: physicians and other health professionals
have insufficient education and training on the subject of addiction


The need for more affordable and accessible treatment facilities for people of different
demographic backgrounds


Addiction treatment should address co-occurring mental health disorders


Inadequate insurance coverage for addiction treatment and chronic disease management


Limited availability of auxiliary support services (e.g., housing, transportation) and
continued medical management for those completing acute treatment


The need to reduce the stigma, misunderstandings and lack of knowledge surrounding
addiction as a disease


Addiction should be addressed as a medical/public health problem rather than a
legal/enforcement issue
