BenhaimShorter and early-blooming cultivars have developed
through continuous selection over hundreds of years by local
people in central Russia and Asia. FIN-314, the first true grain
variety of hemp, was developed from early-blooming Russia stock.
The primary advantage in a short variety of hemp is in
harvestability. FIN-314 also helps the negative connotations noted
by its relationship to the high drug form of cannabis. FIN- 134
hardly looks like cannabis, therefore reducing resources currently
spent on policing the re-introduction of industrial hemp. FIN-314,
which is also known by the common name of ‘Finola’, reaches a
height of 1 to 1. 5 meters and can be combined by a conventional
grain harvester, or combine. The crop may be swathed or straight-
combined at low moisture (up to 15%) without any danger of fibre
lugging up machinery. This variety also lacks a tendency to
branch, thus focusing its energy on producing a single stalk that is
typically full of seeds. Over 2 metric tons of seed per hectare have
been produced by FIN-314 in Canada, which surpasses earlier
records of hemp seed production by over 30%.
In addition to better looks and easier harvestability, FIN-
314 typically produces more oil (up to 38%) and protein (up to
28 %) than other hemp varieties. The fatty acid profile of Finola oil
has over 90% in unsaturated fats, with over 4% GLA and nearly
2% SDA. The seeds of FIN-314 are slightly smaller than most
hemp seeds (typically 70 per gram), and sweeter (up to 5%
natural sugars).
