Following are figures for EU industrial hemp acreage’s in 1999
(1998 figures follow in brackets). All figures are given in hectares:
o Spain 11,032 (20,600)
o France 11,000 (10,000)
o Germany 3,993 (3,500)
o UK 1,517 (2300)
o Netherlands 1,000 (1,000)
o Austria 600 (1,000)
o Italy 300 (1,000)
o Portugal 225 (N/A)
o Finland 150 (N/A)
o Others 117 (N/A)
Totals ca. 30,800 (39,400)
Notably, there was a 10,000h. drop in acreage from 1998, due to
an EU crackdown on ‘subsidy’ farming in Spain. All other relevant
growers have maintained or expanded their acreage.
Hemp
Fibres
It is important to distinguish between short and long fibre. The
cultivation and processing methods and equipment required to
sustain the short fibre industry are completely different from those
of the more traditional long fibre industry. The development of the
fibre crop industry in Europe over the last 10 years has been
entirely due to the production of, and growth of markets for, short
fibre.
