has caused the change fromlag' to lug1, beforegud," blood." The
intermediate sound lig',whichbelongsto both ^\ and tffy<,made
the transition easy. Thelattersign actuallyhas the sound lug'
(in the sense of "servant"); and the former maywell havehad
it also.
Nowfor lag' (=lag=lang)," bright " and " to cleanse " (i.e., "to
makebright"), we have in Chinese the exact equivalentlang," clear,
as moonlight, bright, lustre,clearness." Thetermis compounded
withts'ittg,Amoych'eng(zig,dig),"pure,clear,limpid,""to purify,"
in the expression ts'ing-lang,"limpid, pure, transparent,"of water.
And as the moon-goddess is called lag'-lag'in Accadian, so in
Chinese we have the phrase yueh lang, " bright moonlight, moon
shine." To complete the parallel, thissame Chinesecharacterhas
in Cantonese the meanings " to rinse the mouth," "to rinse in water,
in order to cleanse, as a plate " = lag', misii,lag'lag',ubbubu,"\a
wash." Withthe older lung,we may compare the second half of
the Accadian compounds su-lug and sus-lug, "to be bright"
(namAru). su, sus, answerto si/, " limpid, pure,"such, Cantonese
silt, " snow, to whiten, to wash clean, white." Chinesesupplies,
besides,lang," fire," " the bright blazeof a fire," and lang," bright,
