equivalents of the Accadian terms. I wished to show that,even
restrictingour comparisons withinthe narrow rangeof these two
closely-relatedand ultimatelyidentical sounds, it was possible to
find modern representativesof most of the Accadian homophones
written as .3^-, Vi KUR- Butit is not to be forgotten that the
Chinesekiu, k'iu, are, like all other soundsin the Mandarin vocabu
lary, members of a series ; and if we enlarge our horizon,so as to
