Thisexaminationis based on the consideration of what is the
ideographicmeaning of the Cypriote characters,andby which the
ultimate phoneticlinguistic relations will be determined. Let ustake *). The transliterations by Professor Sayce is Be, Pe, Phe.
Thecharacter is peculiar, butin my MS. Dictionaryof Characters
I find manyexamples. It happens howeverthat in the Vy sylla
baryof West Africathereis the same characterwiththe sound Kai
andthe meaning Man. On looking amongotherAfricanlanguages
of the same group,the Mandenga, for which thereis some reason
to search, we find Be, Ba, Pe in words for Man correspondingto Be,
Pe, Phe in Cypriote. TheFrench philologistshavepaidparticular
attentionto the Mandenga group.
^, ni, is rather peculiar in form. Thereis a corresponding
sign in Vy, the sound is Sun, and the meaning is Nose. In my
Dictionarythereare several formsof this character,chieflyapplied
to N and nasals; so we are safe in concluding the character to be
