The major problem is the flow of the effluent stream not being constant. Little
water is used whilst production is under way, but when a batch is complete a lot of
water is used to wash down. The additives vary and so does production. In order to
treat the effluents properly it is necessary in each case to study and to understand
the variations in the process and the waste characteristics.
