c. Toilet paper should be provided.
d. Each latrine must have an easily operated hand-washing device with soap installed outside. (Unscented
soap in a nylon stocking may be tied to or near the hand-washing device for easy access. Figure 5-20)
e. Latrine Maintenance: Conduct the following procedures routinely:
1 Latrine should be inspected for insects. Insecticide should be sprayed at least twice a week as
a minimum precaution.
2 Latrine seats and boxes should be scrubbed with soap and water and sanitized with a disinfectant
on a daily basis.
3 Ensure that the latrine box remains insect proof (fly-tight) at all times.
f. Pail Latrine: Clean daily. Waste may be disposed of by burning (using 1 part gasoline and 4 parts diesel
fuel) or hauling waste to a suitable area and burying (rinse pail with water and empty rinse water in the
disposal site). If available, dispose of waste at a sewage treatment plant. Emptying and hauling
containers of waste must be closely supervised to prevent careless spillage. The use of plastic bag
liners for pails reduces the risk of accidental spillage. The filled bags are tied at the top then are
disposed of by burning or burial.
g. Constructing and Closing Urinals: Construct 1 per 20 men. Locate urine pits so the urine will not drain
into the pit latrine unless the ground is porous enough to absorb the extra liquid. The urine soakage pit
is the best means of urine disposal in the field. When a urine soakage pit is closed or abandoned it
should be sprayed with residual pesticide and mounded over with 2 feet of compacted soil. Mark the
