Introduction to the AAT
revised May 2019 For educational purposes
The AAT, TGN, and ULAN are now available as LOD They are published under the Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-By) 1.0• When data is linked and open, it
means that data is stru
ctured and published according
to the principles of Linked Data, so t
hat it can be both interlinked and made openly
accessible and shareable on the Semantic Web.
The goal of linked open data is to allow
data from different resource
s to be interconnected and queried.
- In order for data to be understood and process
ed automatically by computers, data in
records or about resources must be expre
ssed in a standard format. Each thing (for
example, a museum object, a place, or a
person) must be repres
ented by a persistent
identifier (known as a Uniform Resource
Identifier (URI)). A Resource Description
Framework (RDF) is a language or format fo
r describing things as well as the
relationships between things as simple proper
ties and values (known as 'triples'), while
things are represented using URIs.
