deliveranotherseriesof lectures commencingin April or May next.
Therewill also be a series of lectures by Mr. Pinchesuponthe Lan
guageand Literature of Assyria andBabylonia. Thesewill commence
on January the 10th, and be continued eachweekuntilthe 21st of March.
Theywill be held everyWednesdayat half-past four,in the rooms of
the Society, andlike those of the President will be free. TheArchaic
Classes, which havebeenfor so long a period in abeyance, are thus
revived, andit is the hope of the Council that they will be continued in
the future.
The possibility of holding theselectureshas arisen fromthe Society
nowbeingin possession of its own house, witha room sufficientlylarge
to accommodate students. Duringthe past yearseveralcircularswere
issuedcallingon the Members to assist in the very desirableobjectof
placingthe Society's Libraryand effects in the new house,in a proper
manner, withoutdrawinguponthe ordinary funds. Thisto some extent
has been attained, for out of the whole numberof Members, not one
hundredhavesentin their subscriptions, andhadit not been for the
generousassistancegivenby some, considerabledifficultywouldhave
arisen. TheSocietyhas passed throughwhatwasperhapsthe most
difficultperiod since its foundation, and it is to be hoped that the
Memberswill help in carrying it forward withevenmoresuccessthan
before. I would ask them to further its interests, whichare naturally
theirown,by every meansin their power. Thereis yet more which
requiresto be done in order to render the Library thoroughlyuseful
to the Members, and I can only hopethatin the next AnnualReport,
whenreferenceis made to this subject, it may be stated thatthe Society
has paid for its publications, furnishedits Library as it ought to be done
and has a Roll of Members equalto any emergency.
Thebooksin the Library, with the kind assistanceof Mr. F. L.
Griffith, havebeen placedfairlyin order, andit has been possible
to arrange themin subjects. A portion of the catalogue is alreadymade,
in the composition of which I again receivedthe assistance of Mr. Grif
fith, and I hope that no great timewill elapse beforeI am able to make
a manuscript catalogueof the whole of the books in the Library.
Duringthe past year, besidesthe Journals receivedin exchange in
formeryears, the list of exchanges has been considerablyextended. The
Societyhas received frommanyauthorsandkindfriendsa number of
booksbearingon the subjects for the elucidation of which the Society
was founded. Thesepresentationsare acknowledged in each numberof
the Proceedings, and I can only hopethateveryMemberwhoissuesa
bookor pamphlet, will remember that by placing a copy in our Library
he at once makes it available to a large numberof students who
otherwise mightnot have accessto it. There beingno funds at the
disposalof the Council for the purchase of booksduring1893,it has not
beenpossiblefor them to make any purchases or do any binding. It is
