Cantilever A horizontal structural condition where a member extends beyond a support, such as a
roof overhang.
Capillary The action by which the surface of a liquid, where it is in contact with a solid, is elevated
or depressed.
Casement A type of window hinged to swing outward.
Casting A metal object made by pouring melted metal into a mold
Catch Basin A complete drain box made in various depths and sizes; water drains into a pit, then
from it through a pipe connected to the box.
Caulk Any type of material used to seal walls, windows, and doors to keep out the weather.
Cavalier Drawing A form of oblique drawing in which the receding sides are drawn full scale, but at
45° to the orthographic front view.
Cavity Wall A masonry wall formed with an air space between each exterior face.
Cement Plaster A plaster that is comprised of cement rather than gypsum.
Center Lines Such lines that indicate the center of a circle, arc, or any symmetrical object; consist
of alternate long and short dashes evenly spaced.
Certificate For Payment A statement from the architect to the owner confirming the amount of
money due the contractor for work accomplished or materials and equipment suitably stored, or both.
Certificate of Insurance A document issued by an authorized representative of an insurance com-
pany stating the types, amounts and effective dates of insurance in force for a designated insured.
Certificate of Occupancy Document issued by governmental authority certifying that all or a desig-
nated portion of a building complies with the provisions of applicable statutes and regulations, and permit-
ting occupancy for its designated use.
Certificate of Substantial Completion A certificate prepared by the architect on the basis of an in-
spection stating that the work or a designated portion thereof is substantially complete, which established
the date of substantial completion; states the responsibilities of the owner and the contractor for security,
maintenance, heat, utilities, damage to the work, and insurance; and taxes the time within which the con-
tractor shall complete the items listed therein.
Cesspool An underground catch basin for the collection and dispersal of sewage.
Change Order A written and signed document between the owner and the contractor authorizing a
change in the work or an adjustment in the contract sum or time. The contract sum and time may be
changed only by change order. A change order may be in the form of additional compensation or time; or
less compensation or time known as a "Deduction."

Circle A plane closed figure having every point on its circumference (perimeter) equidistant from its
center.
Circuit Breaker A safety device that opens and closes an electrical circuit.
Circumference The length of a line that forms a circle.
Clear Floor Space The minimum unobstructed floor or ground space required to accommodate a
single, stationary wheelchair and occupant.
Cleat Any strip of material attached to the surface of another material to strengthen, support, or se-
cure a third material.
Clerestory A window or group of windows that are placed above the normal window height, often
between two roof levels.
