Requisition A statement prepared by the Borrower in a form approved by the Lender setting forth
the amount of the Loan advance requested in each instance and including, if requested by the Lender:
Retainage A sum withheld from progress payments to the contractor in accordance with the terms
of the Owner-Contractor Agreement.
Retaining Wall A masonry wall supported at the top and bottom designed to resist soil loads.
R-Factor A unit of thermal resistance applied to the insulating value of a specific building material.
Revision Block This block is located in the upper right corner of a print. It provides a space to record
any changes made to the original print.
Revolved Section A drawing of an object’s internal cross section superimposed on the basic draw-
ing of the object.
Rheostat An electrical control device used to regulate the current reaching a light fixture. A dimmer switch.
Ridge The highest point on a sloped roof.
Ridge Board A horizontal member that rafters are aligned against to resist their downward force.
Riser The vertical member of stairs between the treads.
Roof Drain A receptacle for removal of roof water.
Roof Pitch The ratio of total span to total rise expressed as a fraction.
Root The surface of the thread corresponding to the minor diameter of an external thread and the
major diameter of an internal thread
Rotation A view in which the object is apparently rotated or turned to reveal a different plane or as-
pect, all shown within the view.
Rough In To prepare a room for plumbing or electrical additions by running wires or piping for a fu-
ture fixture.
Rough Opening A large opening made in a wall frame or roof frame to allow the insertion of a door
or window.
Round The rounded outside corner of a metal object.
R-Value The unit that measures the effectiveness of insulation; the higher the number, the better the
insulation qualities.
Sanitary Sewer A conduit or pipe carrying sanitary sewage.
Scale The relation between the measurement used on a drawing and the measurement of the ob-
ject it represents. A measuring device, such as a ruler, having special graduations.
Schedule of Values A statement furnished by the Contractor to the Architect reflecting the portions
of the Contract sum allocated to the various of the Work and used as the basis for reviewing the Contrac-
tor’s Applications for Payment.
Schematic Diagram A diagram using graphic symbols to show how a circuit functions electrically.
Scratch Coat The first coat of stucco, which is scratched to provide a good bond surface for the sec-
ond coat.
Scupper An opening in a parapet wall attached to a downspout for water drainage from the roof.
Scuttle Attic or roof access with cover or door.
Section A view showing internal features as if the viewed object has been cut or sectioned
Section Lines Thin, diagonal lines used to indicate the surface of an imaginary cut in an object.
Seismicity The worldwide or local distribution of earthquakes in space and time; a general term for
the number of earthquakes in a unit of time, or for relative earthquake activity.
Septic Tank A tank in which sewage is decomposed by bacteria and dispersed by drain tiles.
Shake A hand-split wooden roof shingle, usually western cedar.
