through the Urim and Thummim for the same purpose in the 21st Century that the unsealed
portion was given in the 19th. Both publications were directed by advanced monitors who
knew when and where to present further evidence that the people of the earth are being
monitored and cared for by advanced humans.^62

More About the Three Witnesses

Joseph knew from the outset that all three of these men would one day betray him and
cause insurmountable persecution of him. Nevertheless, he was mandated by his advanced
monitors to make these men the three witnesses to the actuality of the plates and the existence
of advanced humans, in that they bore witness that they had actually seen Moroni. Although
they became some of his meanest enemies, none of them ever doubted or denied what they
had seen and touched. Each man had his own personal reasons for leaving Joseph, but they
could never find a justifiable reason to discount what they could not deny.
There are many dates and places associated with Martin Harris, Oliver Cowdery,
and David Whitmer and the specifics Joseph gave them—in the revelations and history
associated with the beginnings of Mormonism. The most important of these events was
when and how the priesthood was “restored.” This account is detailed at length in
Appendix 1 of this book. Because Harris and Whitmer were not personally associated with
the events surrounding the introduction of priesthood authority, they questioned its need
and purpose most of their lives. To keep them somewhat in tow of the necessity to allow a
priesthood body to evolve, Joseph gave one of his opportunistic “revelations, ” naming all
three witnesses as those who would eventually choose twelve modern apostles.^63

Given From Joseph’s Point of View

As we proceed throughout the remaining chapters of this biography that account
for each year of Joseph’s life, we will avoid most of the specific dates when certain events
occurred. These dates, if necessary for the reader to know, can be found throughout the
other published biographies of Joseph’s life. Nevertheless, although other biographies
contain a copious amount of information, NONE reveals Joseph’s authorized and official
account of what really happened. Generally, the chapter in which a certain event is
explained will correlate to the year it occurred.

Using the Urim and Thummim

After word got out that Joseph had possession of the plates and the Urim and
Thummim, “the persecution...became so intolerable”^64 that Joseph was forced to move back
to Emma’s hometown in Pennsylvania in the latter part of 1827. Martin Harris gifted them
some money to help them move and volunteered his services in any way he could be of
assistance in translating the plates. At first, Joseph wanted nothing to do with another
intruding on his privacy and taking part in the translation. However, Martin’s offer made
Joseph realize that, although his four-year studies included an immense amount of learning,
they did not include penmanship. Emma, however, could write well and Joseph intended to
only allow her to be at his side during the translation.
Emma later reported that Joseph did not need to place the Urim and Thummim on
the plates to translate. This is because Joseph knew that what came through the Urim and
